A car with a ladder frame, three locking differentials and the aerodynamics of a garden shed is rarely taken for off-road use. In Warsaw people take it for two other things: a seating position that sees further than any passenger car, and the ability to travel calmly along the regional roads of the Mazury lake district, where saloons from the same price bracket start counting every pothole.

In short. The Mercedes-AMG G63 is a ladder-frame SUV of the W463A generation with permanent all-wheel drive and three differential locks. The fleet card gives a 2025 car: a four-litre twin-turbo V8, 585 hp, 850 Nm, five seats, five doors, 0–100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h. In the Polish context its strength is regional roads and winter, its weakness is fuel consumption and its dimensions in the historic centre.

Why a ladder-frame SUV in a Warsaw rental fleet

Only two directions from Warsaw honestly fit a single-day format: Lublin, roughly 165 kilometres along the S17, and Kazimierz Dolny, a hundred and fifty kilometres along the Vistula. Beyond that, overnight trips begin. Mikolajki in Mazury is 223 kilometres away, Gizycko about 260. Krakow lies 294 kilometres off, Gdansk 340, Wroclaw almost 360, Zakopane 413.

What makes the Mazury direction distinctive is that the high-speed part ends after roughly a third of the way. After that come regional roads through the lake country — narrow, winding, wooded, with surfaces of varying age. The expressway that serves the north-eastern direction heads for Lomza and Suwalki rather than towards the lakes around Mikolajki and Gizycko.

It is on roads like these that a tall, ladder-framed vehicle stops being an image choice and becomes a practical one. The same applies to winter trips and to rural approaches to lakeside houses, where the tarmac runs out two hundred metres before the gate.

Forty-five years under unchanged bodywork

The model reached the market in 1979 as a joint development between Daimler-Benz and the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and from the first day it has been assembled in Graz, where the Austrian partner was based. The original brief was military and commercial: a ladder frame, permanent all-wheel drive, three locks, live axles. A civilian version ran alongside from the very beginning.

The flat panels, protruding door hinges, upright windscreen and round headlights have barely changed since — and out of that grows the most durable myth about the model: that the car has stayed the same for forty-five years. The silhouette has indeed been deliberately preserved; it is part of the identity. Underneath it, practically everything has changed: leaf springs gave way to coils and then to independent front suspension, the frame was renewed with a wider track, the engine range travelled from naturally aspirated diesels of the seventies to a twin-turbo eight with a mild hybrid and a fully electric version with four wheel motors, the transmission went from a four-speed manual to a nine-speed automatic, and the body from all-steel to mixed construction.

The origin of the design is worth remembering too. Three differential locks, permanent all-wheel drive and a low range appeared here not for the sake of an image but because the vehicle’s first customer was the army: geometric off-road ability and torsional rigidity were part of the specification, and the cheapest, most repairable way to obtain them was a ladder frame with live axles. Civilian luxury grew onto that skeleton later, towards the end of the nineties, when the first versions from the AMG division arrived.

Four technical generations have passed beneath a single exterior: the W460 from 1979, the utilitarian W461 for professional and military customers, the comfort-oriented W463 from 1990, and today’s W463A from 2018.

The 2018 break and the mild-hybrid engine

The move to the W463A is the biggest engineering break in the model’s history. A new frame with a wider track arrived, and, for the first time ever, independent front suspension on double wishbones in place of the live front axle. The ladder frame and all three differential locks stayed.

The reaction was wary: part of the audience feared that abandoning the live axle would cut suspension articulation and, with it, capability on serious terrain. The manufacturer and off-road tests point out that the three locks and the electronic systems make up for some of the lost mechanical travel, while on tarmac and broken roads handling and comfort improved appreciably. No unambiguous verdict of “better” or “worse” on heavy terrain exists in published comparative tests — that is a matter of opinion rather than a fact recorded by the manufacturer.

The engine in the AMG version is a four-litre V8 with two turbochargers from the M177 family, the same in architecture as the one used in the brand’s sports models. From model year 2025 a 48-volt integrated starter-generator has been added to it — a mild hybrid that gives a brief boost of pull at low revs and smooths the operation of the stop-start system. There is no full electric drive here: the battery is small, and the car cannot travel on electricity alone.

The fleet card states 585 hp and 850 Nm for this example, with 0–100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. Kerb weight for the version according to official manufacturer data is around 2,650 kilograms, and the drag coefficient about 0.48. The last figure explains everything else: fuel consumption on this car is among the highest in the segment, and on a four-hundred-kilometre run it is felt more clearly than any difference in performance against a rival.

A practical consequence of that mass and that aerodynamic shape is that brakes and tyres work in a regime untypical of a passenger car. Reaching a hundred in 4.3 seconds gives the sensation of a sports car, but slowing from the same speeds in a vehicle of nearly two tonnes seven hundred with a high centre of gravity takes noticeably more room than intuition suggests. On a wet autumn road the gap to the car ahead is worth keeping with a margin that feels excessive.

A separate parallel branch of the range is the fully electric version with four motors, one per wheel, where the locks are imitated electronically through independent torque control. It weighs roughly four hundred kilograms more than the petrol car and has no bearing on the fleet vehicle.

Dimensions and the clean transport zone

The Warsaw clean transport zone (SCT) has operated since July 2024 and occupies about 37 km² — some seven per cent of the city’s area, nearly all of Śródmieście and the edges of several adjoining districts. Since January 2026 the second stage of the schedule has been switched on: a petrol car needs Euro 3 or a year of manufacture from 2000 onwards. A 2025 car passes it without question, and the later steps — in 2028, 2030 and 2032 — are equally harmless for it.

It works through automatic plate reading checked against the state vehicle database; unlike the German scheme, a windscreen sticker decides nothing here and stays voluntary. The streets along which the boundary runs formally lie outside the zone.

The real restriction in the centre is a different, physical one. The width of the body, the upright glass and the length of the car make the multi-storey car parks of Śródmieście and the inner courtyards of the old districts a trial. The turning circle of a ladder-frame vehicle is no passenger car’s either. Parking in the centre is better planned in advance than searched for on arrival.

Mazury, winter and long routes

In winter the car’s original logic comes to the surface. Permanent all-wheel drive, a low range and three locks make a set that works on a snow-covered forest road to a lakeside house in a way no crossover with an on-demand rear axle can match.

The legal framework, meanwhile, is milder than visitors expect. Polish law imposes no seasonal duty to change tyres — no such rule exists either in the road traffic law or in the regulations on the technical condition of vehicles. General year-round requirements apply: tread from 1.6 millimetres, no damage exposing the cords, tyres of identical construction on one axle. The main risk here is not a fine but insurance: if a crash happens on summer tyres in snow, the insurance company is entitled to see gross negligence in it and reduce the payout under a voluntary policy or pursue recovery.

Snow chains are compulsory in Poland only where the corresponding sign stands, and they apply until the sign cancelling it. Such sections occur in isolated places, primarily in the mountains in the south of the country.

If the route leaves the country the rules change: the southern neighbours require cold-season tyres between November and March whenever the road is in a winter condition, while the western ones apply a situational rule tied to the state of the surface and to the tyre marking. Terms for taking the car abroad: confirm when booking.

The top speed of 240 km/h given on the card remains a reference value on Polish roads: nowhere in the country may you travel faster than 140 kilometres an hour, and that bar is available on motorways only.

Who it suits and who it doesn’t

Good for trips to Mazury and to country houses, for winter journeys, a family of five with luggage, and routes where part of the way runs over gravel or snow. It also suits anyone for whom the seating position itself matters — visibility from here is better than from any passenger car in the fleet.

It does not suit daily driving in the centre with parking in the courtyards of the old districts, nor scenarios where consumption over a long leg is important. Nor does it suit anyone expecting car-like handling from a tall vehicle: since 2018 body roll and steering precision have come markedly closer to an ordinary premium SUV, but the fundamental ladder-frame manner has not gone anywhere.

This is a full family format with a high seating position and upright glass that gives good visibility from every row. How high is fuel consumption on a long road? Among the highest in the segment. The reason is not power but shape: a drag coefficient of around 0.48 is a value untypical of modern cars. On runs of three or four hundred kilometres to Gdansk or Krakow, the difference against a streamlined crossover of comparable class becomes the main item of expenditure on the trip.
